Weight-loss monitoring bloodwork in BC: your routes compared

In Greater Vancouver, there are three main routes to weight-loss monitoring bloodwork: your family doctor plus a LifeLabs collection site, your weight-loss program's own labs, or an at-home service such as Numia.
Dynacare often shows up in the same searches, but the BC centres we could verify on its site are in the Okanagan, and its Home Care service lists Ontario and Winnipeg.
Whichever you choose, aim for a baseline and a trend, not a one-off. Tracking tends to pay off: in a review of 39 weight-loss trials, more digital tracking of weight, food and activity went with more weight loss in 74% of the analyses (Patel et al., 2021). Numia's Weight Loss Monitoring Panel adds your bloodwork to that picture.
How do the routes compare?
| Doctor → LifeLabs | Your program's labs | Numia | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who orders | Your family doctor or NP | Your prescriber | A licensed Canadian physician, online within 24 hours |
| Appointment first | Yes | Depends | No |
| Where | A collection site | Varies | Your home, about 10 minutes |
| Results | Through your clinician | Varies | Plain English in the app, in 7 days |
| Cost | Publicly funded when clinically indicated | Varies | $299, an HSA-eligible service |
What does the public route involve?
The public route is publicly funded when clinically indicated. BC's guidelines are written for a funded system that prioritises clinically indicated tests, so what's ordered depends on your situation. It also runs in steps: an appointment, a requisition, a lab visit, a wait, then another appointment for results.
What comes back depends on the requisition. On BC's standard form, "electrolytes" means sodium and potassium only, and triglycerides and LDL need the full lipid profile box. Ask for any marker you want by name. Numia's Weight Loss panel includes chloride, bicarbonate, triglycerides and LDL as standard.
What about LifeLabs' online store?
LifeLabs' BC online store skips the first appointment. You buy a test, an MD Connected provider signs the requisition based on your screening answers, and you still visit a LifeLabs lab. Results come through MyCareCompass, which needs your Personal Health Number (PHN). When we searched the store, it returned no thyroid tests.
Where does Numia fit?
Numia brings every step into one place. A licensed Canadian physician reviews and approves your requisition online within 24 hours. A BC-licensed clinician comes to your home for a morning draw, five days a week, in about 10 minutes. The panel measures 22 markers in one draw.
Results arrive in plain English in the Numia app in 7 days, where the Numia Companion, an AI that has read your results, answers questions. Out-of-range results are physician-reviewed with next steps, and an optional wellness consultation with a physician is available. It's an HSA-eligible service. Numia doesn't prescribe GLP-1s; share results with your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use my weight-loss clinic's labs or book my own?
If your program includes labs and your prescriber reviews them, use those. Book your own when labs aren't included, or for a baseline and record you keep if you switch programs. Numia's Weight Loss panel is built for that.
Can I get metabolic bloodwork in BC without a GP requisition?
Yes, though a practitioner still orders it. Numia's physician approves the Weight Loss panel online, so you don't need your own GP. LifeLabs' BC online store uses MD Connected providers to sign requisitions for its tests.
Does LifeLabs do home blood collection in BC?
LifeLabs lists BC for MyVisit, its at-home service, in select service areas; you book by uploading a requisition. Numia's at-home collection covers Greater Vancouver and includes the physician's requisition.
